Note: This lesson revises Why-questions in the past tense and the answers, and some opposite odjectives.

Step 1 Revision

1 Revise the irregular verbs learnt for homework by playing the game in Lesson 53,Step 1 of the TB.

2 Ask the Ss to show their homework(Wb Lesson 53, Ex.4)to a partner. Ask the Ss What did you do last week? What did he/ she/your partner do last week? etc.

Step 2 Presentation

Draw two faces on the Bb, like this:

Point to the first picture. Say This is Bill. He is happy because he has a big cake. Why is he happy? Help the Ss to answer Because he has a big cake.

Point to the second picture. say This is Mary. She is sad because she is very hungry. Why is she sad? Help the Ss to answer Because she is very hungry. Ask randomly: Why is Bill happy? Why is Mary sad?

Draw two more faces, one sad and one happy, and write Yesterday under the two new pictures.

Point to the first new picture. Say Yesterday Bill was sad because he was very hungry. Why was he sad? etc.

Point to the second new picture. Say Yesterday Mary was happy because she had a big cake. Why was she happy? etc.

Ask randomly Why is Bill happy today? Why was Mary happy yesterday? Why is Mary sad today? Why was Bill sad yesterday?

Make sure the Ss use the correct tense and verb form.

Step 3 Practice

SB page 54, Part 1. Ss work in pairs, matching the questions and answers. Check the answers with the whole class.(See the answers to Wb Lesson 54,Ex.1.)

Step 4 Writing

Wb Lesson 54, Ex.1. Ss work alone, then check their answers in pairs. Finally, check the answers with the whole class.

Step 5 Practice

SB page 54, Part 2.Ss work in pairs to write down the opposites.

Check the answers. The answers are: young, small/little, outside, short, dear, open, heavy, early, empty, day, up, short.

Step 6 Listening

SB page 54, Part 3. Listening Cassette Lesson 54.

Listening text:

Yesterday was Saturday. Mr King took his family to the People's Park in the morning. They got up early and had their breakfast quickly. After that they went to the park by car.It was nine o'clock when they got there.

There were many people in the park. Lily climbed the hills in the middle of the park. Lucy flew a kite with some other children. Mr King and his wife were tired(疲劳的)after five days' work. They sat under a tall tree and had a rest. The King family had a good time all the morning.

The answers are: 1C, 2A, 3B.

Step 7 Writing

Wb Lesson 54, Ex.3. Do the first one as a model, then Ss work in pairs. Check the answers. The answers are: old; late; night; tall(er); long; near; down; inside; cheap; full.

Homework

Finish off the Workbook exercises.
